  • New! License provisioning during customer addition: The Add Customer process now includes the ability to provision Spanning Backup licenses to the domain during customer creation.
  • New! Upgrade From Spanning Trial: Upgrade your Spanning Backup trial subscription to a production subscription to enable Spanning license assignment.
  • New! Spanning Used Licenses Display: The Used Licenses bar shows the number of total licenses and number of licenses assigned to the domain.
  • New! Spanning Seat Protection Chart: The Seat Protection pie chart shows a view of protected and unprotected seats aggregated across all Spanning domains.
  • The Seat Protection bar chart shows how many users within the domain are protected.
  • New! Backup Total Success Rate: The Backup Total Success Rate pie chart shows a view of successful, partially successful and failed backup jobs aggregated across all Spanning domains.

Welcome to release 2.59

Unitrends aims to make backup management hassle-free for the seamless protection of your data, wherever it lives. This month’s portal release includes:

  • New! Asset relationships: UniView now displays the relationship between protected assets at a glance. The Asset Detail pane now shows these relationships, such as applications linked to an asset, or the host infrastructure of a virtual machine.

  • Improved navigation and layout: The dashboard now features key tabs for Unitrends, Spanning and Microsoft Azure.

  • From the Unitrends dashboard tab, you will see a high-level view of appliances, backup jobs, low-space appliances and local storage used.

  • When you click Appliances, you will navigate to the Protect tab with a more detailed view of appliances and assets.

  • The Spanning tab includes navigation for each respective Spanning backup module, Microsoft 365, Google Workspace and Salesforce.

  • New! Backup policies for Windows file-level assets: UniView’s backup policies feature now supports configuration of file-level backups of Windows assets.
    • From the Protect > Appliance Detail or Protect > Assets page, quickly view and manage policies that define the frequency at which file-level backups are taken for your Windows assets. Set or remove policies for multiple assets in a single operation.
    • To set a backup policy, simply select one or more Windows assets and define the frequency. Backups are initiated by the policy to meet the schedule you set.

  • New! Removing Spanning Backup domains from UniView: A UniView Portal superuser can now manually remove Microsoft 365 tenants, Google Workspace domains or Salesforce organizations from UniView. Use this procedure in the following cases:
    • You want the tenant, domain or organization removed now rather than waiting for them to be automatically removed.
    • You are preparing to transition the tenant, domain or organization to a different Spanning Backup reseller. Removing the tenant, domain or organization unlinks the reseller ID from its Spanning Backup account. After the reseller’s ID has been unlinked, a new reseller ID can be assigned without any interruption to their Spanning Backup protection. You can then add the tenant, domain or organization back to UniView (as described in Integrating a Microsoft 365 tenant, Integrating a Google Workspace domain or Integrating a Salesforce organization).

  • New! Add Cold Copy Backups to UniView Backup Policies: If your Unitrends appliance is copying backups to a third-party cloud target, you can now include cold copies in backup policies created in UniView. Simply use the Appliance Details page to create or modify backup policies, now with the ability to view the appliance’s third-party cloud targets and configure copy policy in just a few clicks.
    • Note: To add cold copy backups to UniView policies, the Unitrends appliance must be running version 10.8.3 or higher.
    • Note: To add cold copy backups to UniView policies, the Unitrends appliance must be configured with a third-party cloud cold backup copy target. To add a third-party cloud target, see Backup copy targets.
  • Changes to backup policies workflow: Creating backup policies in UniView is supported for Windows image-level assets, VMware virtual machines and Hyper-V virtual machines. This release includes the following changes to backup policies:

  • New! “Show Me” interactive product tours: We’ve added a new product tour experience with interactive walkthroughs for the following Spanning Backup features: Integrating a Microsoft 365 tenant or Google Workspace domain, allocating licenses and upgrading from a Spanning trial to a paid subscription.
  • Enhancements for KaseyaOne centralized user management: After you have configured the KaseyaOne integration, you can use the following settings to configure centralized user management for the UniView portal module: Log In with KaseyaOne, Require Log In with KaseyaOne, Automatic User Provisioning, Automatic User Deprovisioning and Access Groups.
    • Enabling the Log In with KaseyaOne toggle is required before enabling any other centralized user management settings. In this release, the UniView portal UI now enforces this requirement.
    • For additional information, see Configuring KaseyaOne centralized user management.
  • Removal of inactive tenant for Spanning Backup integrations: After integrating a Microsoft 365 tenant, Google Workspace domain or Salesforce organization, updated information is synced to the UniView portal hourly from Spanning Backup.
    • Beginning in this release, a Microsoft 365 tenant, Google Workspace domain or Salesforce organization is removed from the UniView portal if no updates are received from Spanning for seven days (data in Spanning Backup is not impacted).
    • This ensures that the UniView Protect page provides information only for your active Spanning Backup tenants for a more streamlined user experience.

  • Evidence of compliance for Spanning Backup integrations: Kaseya’s Compliance Manager GRC is a powerful, versatile tool that enables an auditor to quickly perform an assessment against a variety of IT and cybersecurity compliance standards.   • New! Hyper-V backup policies for Hyper-V virtual machines: UniView’s backup policies feature now supports Hyper-V virtual machines. From the Protect > Appliances or Protect > Assets pages, you can quickly view and manage the policies that define the frequency at which host-level backups are taken for your Hyper-V VMs. You can set and remove policies for multiple Hyper-V assets in a single operation.
    • To set a backup policy, simply select one or more assets and define the backup frequency. If your Unitrends appliance is copying backups to the Unitrends Cloud, you can enable hot backup copies for your Hyper-V policies with a single click directly within the Backup Policy dialog.
      • To add a Hyper-V host – Use this procedure to add a new Hyper-V host server. All VMs will be automatically added for you to apply backup policies to the VMs.
      • Applying backup policies to an appliance’s unprotected assets – Use this procedure to apply a backup policy to an appliance’s unprotected Windows image-level assets, VMware VMs and Hyper-V VMs.
      • Working with backup policies – Use these procedures to view and manage backup policies for all of your assets, across all Unitrends appliances. You can view, edit, set or remove policies for multiple assets, across multiple appliances, in a single operation.

  • New – Groups page: For consistency across KaseyaOne modules, Scopes in the UniView portal are now called groups.

  • New – Access groups for KaseyaOne centralized user management: KaseyaOne’s access groups feature grants users access to other Kaseya modules based on their role. Save time by assigning permissions to a group and assigning users to the group rather than assigning permissions to individual users.

    • If you enable access groups, role-based access control from KaseyaOne will be allowed for the module. Define mapping rules (by mapping KaseyaOne groups to UniView organizations) to control user access. See KaseyaOne: Manage groups for additional details.
    • Once access groups are enabled, groups are managed through KaseyaOne only. UniView’s Settings > Groups page allows you to view groups, but they are not editable through the UniView portal. Use Admin Settings > Groups in KaseyaOne to add, edit or remove groups. See KaseyaOne: Manage groups for additional details.

  • New – Copy backups to the Unitrends Cloud: The Backup Policies feature now includes an option to copy backups to the Unitrends Cloud. For appliances that are configured with a Unitrends Cloud hot copy target, simply enable the Unitrends Cloud toggle in the Set Backup Policy dialog to start copying new backups. Based on your policy, every time a backup is run for an asset, a backup copy is created and automatically replicated to the Unitrends Cloud.

  • New – KaseyaOne centralized user management and automatic user de-provisioning: Integrate UniView with KaseyaOne to set up centralized user management for increased security and valuable time savings. Centralized user management includes the new Automatic User De-provisioning feature along with these other related settings:
    • Log in with KaseyaOne (unified login)
    • Require log in with KaseyaOne (SSO, enforce 2FA), Automatic User Provisioning and Access Groups (role-based access control)
    • Enable the Automatic User Provisioning and Automatic User De-provisioning features to automatically sync user data between UniView and KaseyaOne any time a user is added or deleted.
    • Configure centralized user management settings in UniView (Settings > Integrations) or in KaseyaOne (Admin Settings > Module Management). The settings you configure are automatically synced between UniView and KaseyaOne.

  • New – Delete users: On the Settings > Users page, you can now delete a UniView portal user.

  • New: Add assets – You can now add assets to your Unitrends appliances directly from the UniView Appliance page or Appliances Details page. Click Add Asset to add any of these asset types:
    • Windows physical machines – Adding the machine also adds any hosted applications (e.g., SQL or Exchange).
    • Linux physical machines – Adding the machine also adds any hosted applications (e.g., Oracle on Linux).
    • vCenter or ESXi servers – Adding the server also adds its hosted VMs.
    • Hyper-V servers – Adding the server also adds its hosted VMs.

Then click View Unprotected Assets to quickly apply backup policies to your newly added Windows image-level assets and VMware VMs.

  • New: Remove assets – You can now use UniView to remove assets from your Unitrends appliance(s).
    • Note: When an asset is removed, all backups of that asset are also deleted. Use caution when removing an asset.

    • From the Assets page, select assets and click Remove to delete assets from multiple appliances.

  • New – Require Login with KaseyaOne: To enhance security and user management, you can now require users to log in with their KaseyaOne credentials. If needed, you can easily add exceptions for specified users so they can continue using their UniView credentials. - Use Require Login with KaseyaOne along with Automatic User Creation (released in V2.44) to enforce KaseyaOne as an identity provider (IdP), adding an additional layer of security to your backup portal. - Note: KaseyaOne also supports third-party IdP integrations, such as Okta, Microsoft Entra ID and Passly. If you have integrated your third-party IdP with KaseyaOne, simply add the KaseyaOne integration and enable Require Login with KaseyaOne to manage your UniView users with this idP provider.

  • New backup policies for VMware virtual machines: From the Backup Status > Assets page, you can quickly view, create and manage policies that define the frequency at which host-level backups are taken for your VMware VMs. You can set backup policies for multiple assets in a single operation. A single backup policy can now include both VMware VMs and Windows image -level assets. Backup policies may be applied to any VMware or Image-level assets across multiple appliances.
    • Backup policies utilize the incremental forever backup strategy. We recommend setting a policy in UniView for easier policy management unless you need to exclude disks or volumes from the backup (use the local UI in these situations).
    • To set a backup policy, simply select one or more assets and define the backup frequency. Backups are initiated by the policy to meet the RPO schedule defined. For details, see Working with backup policies in the UniView Portal Guide.

  • Backup Status > Assets Page — We’ve enhanced the usability of this page with the following updates:
    • Asset type — Added more icons and updated descriptions for quick identification.

    • Set Backup Policy — The clock graphic now closes upon clicking elsewhere in the dialog. Dark theme styles have been modified for readability.
    • Remove Backup Policy — This option is now disabled if the selected asset has no policy.

  • New Integrated Customer Billing for Spanning Microsoft 365 Backup and Spanning Google Workspace Backup — You can now post license information to your Autotask, BMS or Vorex PSA. Once you have integrated your PSA, KaseyaOne and Spanning Backup with UniView, you can set up mappings to update Spanning license data nightly in your PSA. This license data can then be used by your PSA when generating invoices.

  • New Spanning Integration for Salesforce — You can now integrate instances of Spanning Backup for Salesforce to manage backups directly from UniView. Once you’ve added the integration, use these UniView features:
    • Backup Status > Salesforce View — Use the Salesforce view to manage organization mappings, view license and storage information, and check the status of an organization’s recent backups.
    • BackupIQ Alerts — BackupIQ generates alerts for failed Spanning Salesforce backups. If you’ve integrated your PSA system (Autotask, BMS, Vorex or ConnectWise Manage), BackupIQ creates a ticket in your PSA for each alert. You can also opt to receive email notifications for these alerts.

  • New Integration for Datto Continuity for Microsoft Azure (DCMA) — You can now integrate your Datto Portal to receive DCMA backup alerts in UniView. These backup alerts are also displayed in your Datto Portal.
    • For details, see Integrated Datto Portal, Working with your Datto Portal integration and Alerts for Datto Continuity for Microsoft Azure (DCMA) in UniView Portal Guide.
  • UI – Appliance and Appliance Details — Show Assets has been moved to the left and is now called Show Protected Assets. Once you are viewing assets, click Show Protected Assets again to hide the list.
    • Hide Assets has been removed.

We are proud to introduce the next generation of UniView (formerly Unitrends Backup Portal). We’re quickly transitioning from our first generation UniView into a second-generation native single-page application (UniView 2.0).

This month’s release includes:

  • UI Enhancements —

    • Updated logos and branding from Unitrends Backup to UniView.
    • In the top navigation bar, Settings has been replaced with a gear icon.
    • Integrations > API Access: The Public API view is now called API Access.
    • VSA Integrations: The portal TAP module is now called UniView.vsaz.
    • Table Sorting: Arrows used to sort by column now display without hovering.

  • Note — If the logos and branding you see in your currently deployed VSA module do not look like this new UniView module, you may be using a prior version of the TAP module for the Unitrends Backup Portal platform. As of January 2023, module branding has been modified, but no other functional changes exist. We do not recommend that customers uninstall the older module to use the newer module since this will impact existing mappings (e.g., UniView user accounts mapped to KaseyaOne accounts for single sign-on and assets mapped to VSA IDs).

    • Appliance Updates: Keeping your Unitrends appliance(s) up to date is critical for optimal security and performance and ensures you benefit from the latest features and fixes. This insight is sent if Helix auto updates have not been enabled on any of your Unitrends appliance(s).

  • New Cold Backup Copies — View information about our cold backup copies residing on storage managed by other storage providers (e.g., Amazon S3, Rackspace) or on other backup copy media (e.g., tape or NAS device).

    • Asset Page: The Last Replication column is now called Last Backup Copy and shows the time elapsed since the most recent hot or cold backup copy.
    • Asset Page: Recent Replications is now called Recent Backup Copies. Status icons report information for both hot and cold backup copies. Hover over the icon to see the number of hot and cold copies for the given day.
    • Asset Detail Page: The Recovery Points Replication column is now called Backup Copies. Status icons report information for both hot and cold backup copies. Hover over the icon to see the number of hot and cold copies for the given day.
      • Click a recovery point to view the updated Job Log, which includes tabs for local backups, hot copies and cold copies.

  • Fixed — An issue that enabled users to delete a scope assigned to users or organizations. With this fix, the following message displays if a user attempts to delete an assigned scope: This scope has been assigned to users or organizations. Please unassign all users and organizations before removing a scope.

  • Conditional Alarm Thresholds — Conditional alarms enable you to set a threshold against the last good backup and last good replicated backup (backup copy). If the threshold is crossed (e.g., there has been no good backup/backup copy in more than X hours/days), an alert is added to BackupIQ.

    • Note: To reduce alert noise, backups and replicated backups that ran with warnings are now considered good backups when checking whether a conditional alarm threshold has been crossed. In prior releases, only backups that ran successfully with no warnings were considered good.

  • UI Enhancements — Updates to colors, buttons, table styles and dashboard tiles. Added avatars to user icon.

  • Fixed — An issue where integration with Kaseya VSA failed if the VSA hostname contained uppercase letters.

  • BackupIQ Alerts —
    • Alerts are now grouped in these categories: Helix updates, Appliance is offline alerts, Backup agent upgrade available, Storage problems, High storage growth, Inventory Sync warning, Licensing issues, Password changed, Reboot required, Replica failures and Ransomware.
    • Alerts are now generated for appliances running Unitrends release 10.6.1 or higher only. If you have older appliances, the UI displays a banner listing appliances that must be upgraded to receive alerts.
    • To customize the alerts you receive, you can now enable or disable alerts by category. Go to Settings > Alerts and simply click a toggle to enable or disable a category.
    • Email Alerts: Email notifications are now sent for all alerts. For appliance offline and conditional alarms, the Unitrends Portal (UniView) automatically removes the alert from BackupIQ once the alert condition has been resolved and emails a notification that the alert has been dismissed. Other alerts must be dismissed manually.
  • New Organization Mapping for PSA Integrations — You can now quickly map organizations to PSA accounts or companies while adding or modifying your PSA integration. No need to go to the Organizations page.
  • UI Enhancements —
    • Dashboard: New Low Space Appliances tile added to see whether any appliance has less than 30% space available. Click the tile to view low space appliances in the Appliances view.
    • BackupIQ, Asset Detail > Job Log: The log display has been widened for easier viewing.
    • Jobs Page: For quick access, the Recent Jobs view now displays by default.

  • New IT Glue Integration — You can now synchronize your assets and appliances with Kaseya’s IT Glue documentation platform. This enables IT Glue users to:

    • View backup configuration information from the Unitrends Portal.
    • Display backup status, last backup time and storage for endpoints in IT Glue.
    • Ensure organizations and assets from the Unitrends Portal are automatically mapped to
    • IT Glue organizations and configurations.

  • VSA Integration — A Download Manifest button has been added to existing VSA integrations so you can quickly download and install the latest TAP module.

  • Email Alerts — Email notifications are now sent any time an appliance has been offline for a specified period of time (one hour by default), when a conditional alarm threshold is crossed or when a Helix failure occurs.

    • Once the alert condition has been resolved, the Unitrends Portal automatically removes the alert from BackupIQ and emails notification that the alert has been dismissed.

  • UI Enhancements —

    • Backup Status Page: The Appliances page is now called the Backup Status page. Click Backups at the top of the screen to launch the page.
      • Use this page to access Appliances, Assets and Agents views.

  • Settings Page: For quick access, simply click Settings at the top of the screen to launch the Settings page.

  • Organizations Page: You can now delete an organization right from the Organizations page by clicking the vertical ellipses and selecting Delete.

  • Backup Status > Appliances View: Clicking Show Assets now lists only assets that are currently protected by a Unitrends backup schedule.

    • Assets that have been backed up but are not included in an enabled backup schedule are now listed under Unprotected Assets.

    • To reduce alert noise, conditional alarms are now generated only for assets that are protected by a Unitrends backup schedule. A backup alarm is generated if the backup does not complete successfully within X hours or days of the job’s scheduled start time. A replication alarm is generated if the successful backup is not replicated within X hours or days of the backup job’s end time.

  • Updated Email Alert Templates

    • Emails have been updated with a modern layout including new fonts for a fresh look and feel.

  • Appliances Page Optimizations

    • ‘Order By’ filter list now includes appliance Free Space and Version

We’ve updated our dashboard with updated tiles and icons for a fresh look and feel

Once an alert condition has been resolved, we’ll automatically remove the alert from BackupIQ. If you have integrated your PSA (BMS, Autotask, or ConnectWise Manage), you can opt to automatically change the status associated tickets in your PSA as alerts are removed from BackupIQ.

You can now quickly connect to an appliance right from BackupIQ. While viewing an alert, simply click the ↗ next to the appliance name.
